RUNWAY: FASHIONTRENDS S/S 2014 REPORT

I was inspired by these fashiontrends for Spring / Summer 2014.

'80s Revival
Once considered the decade that style forgot, designers are breathing new life into the era’s fashion signatures. See the shoulder-padded mini dresses complete with lip print at Saint Laurent or Balmain’s gold buttons and chains aplenty for evidence. The trick is to wear just one piece, keeping the rest of your look contemporary to avoid costume dressing.

Global Beats
Givenchy, Valentino and Missoni all looked to the exotic colors, prints and embellishment of traditional tribal arts. Bold color clashing, oversized shapes and silhouettes, plus striking gold jewelry combine for a graphic journey through time and place and one of the season’s most exciting moods.

Haute Sports
There is something so feel-good about luxurious sportswear; almost as if pulling on Sacai silk trackpants, slipping on a Jonathan Saunders bomber jacket or donning the new running shoes will make you immediately healthier. You will certainly look good, at least and though they may not require you to actually break a sweat, S/S 2014’s sports-inspired pieces are strong investment buys.

Luxe Traveler
S/S 2014 brings with it the spirit of adventure. Designers journeyed far and wide and returned with a treasure trove of ideas. Etro discovered Eastern details and wrapping, while The Row, Valentino and Chloé found influence in the rich colors of Morocco. These are idealized versions of destination-found pieces for the well-traveled and the exotic dreamer.

The rule is simple this season: any color goes, so long as it shines. Designers must have been dipping into the candy box, as discarded wrappers surely inspired Altuzarra, Saint Laurent and Simone Rocha, and their golden (and silver) moments. We defy you not to hit the dance floor for a Diana Ross moment in Lanvin’s lamé collection with its lustrous jewel shades.

Modern Pastels
Pistachio, rose, lemon, lavender ... Not flavors of delicious macaroons, but pastel shades rescued from mother-of-the-bride connotations to become S/S 2014’s coolest hues. Balmain turned them into power suits; Burberry Prorsum created figure-hugging pencil skirts in embellished duck-egg blue and Christopher Kane gave a girly edge to everyday separates. Not as saccharine as they first may seem.

Reveal & Conceal
S/S 2014 is all about what you reveal and what you keep hidden. On the runways, exquisite lace and flyaway chiffons were spliced and sliced into monochrome day dresses, eveningwear and even knitwear, offering a hint at what lies beneath, but always retaining an air of mystery. Think seductive and flirtatious while preserving your modesty - Erdem’s glorious white skirt and top are a shining example.

The Lady
The style sophisticate endures yet again for Spring: the emphasis on the waist remains, while beckoning hemlines to fall below the knee. Full prom-inspired skirts paired with a fitted shell top or cropped jacket, or alternatively narrow pencil skirts and bustiers, are refined without being the least bit fussy.

Trend Report S/S 2014 The New Sensuality

The New Sensuality
Soft lines, fluid silhouettes and neutral shades lead Spring’s sensuous new mood. Nodding to the minimalism of Winter, but with a more romantic femininity, designers largely played with a palette of white, black and blush in supple and tactile fabrics. Satin makes a seductive return, elegantly caressing the body without revealing too much.

To the MAX
In a move away from minimalism, designers have decided that more is more for S/S 2014. Mary Katrantzou worked with the French atelier Lesage on OTT embroidered florals, bright color hit back at Miu Miu and Marc Jacobs announced head-to-toe embellishment.
