FURNITURE DESIGN: &Tradition Mayor Sofa by Arne Jacobsen

Love this elegant sofa design, called the Mayor sofa. Great color too! Mayor was created for Søllerød City Hall, built 1939-1942 by the Danish designers Arne Jacobsen and Flemming Lassen. The sofa shows a moderation of modernist design - the frame is made of solid oak. The upholstery is tight, but has loose cushions - creating a more relaxed piece. Jacobsen and Lassen wanted to take a more human approach to modernism and they focused heavily on comfort and livability. The stylish design has a solid oak frame and is upholstered in Divina 3 Fabric by Kvadrat. The Mayor sofa recently won the award for 'Best Reissue' at the prestigious Wallpaper* Design Awards 2013.
More about the designer:
Arne Jacobsen was one of Denmark's most influential 20th century architects and designers. Both his buildings and products combine modernist ideals with a Nordic love of naturalism. Born in Copenhagen at the turn of the last century, Arne Jacobsen worked as an apprentice bricklayer before winning a place to study architecture at the Royal Academy of the Arts in 1924. As a student, Jacobsen travelled to Paris for the ground-breaking 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs, where he won a silver medal for a chair design. By the late 1950s, Jacobsen was given an opportunity to put his theories of integrated design and architecture into practise in the design of the SAS Air Terminal and Royal Hotel in Copenhagen.

Architecture: Renovation Toronto University by Moriyama & Teshima

Courtyard becomes rotunda inside Toronto University building by Moriyama & Teshima.
Behind the aluminium facade of this innovation centre for the University of Toronto Mississauga, local office Moriyama & Teshima Architects has converted a courtyard into a rotunda with a glass roof. What a beautiful shape is this rotunda!

The upgrade to the Kaneff Centre – completed in 1992 at the campus located 33 kilometres West of central Toronto – provides new amenities for students and staff alongside the existing auditorium, classrooms and offices. Below you will find an impression. For more information & photos, see the enclosed links below.
