VINTAGE FASHION - PHOTO LOVE - NORMAN PARKINSON (16)

Would like to share with you today this interesting photo from fashion photographer Norman Parkinson: The Art of Travel on Artnet Auctions. Love his beautiful fashion photos. Norman Parkinson was a pioneer of fashion photography. Famous for his iconic sense of style and glamour, Parkinson’s unexpected and unique approach brought a freshness to the sometimes staid genres of fashion and portrait photography. Be Inspired ........
More about Norman Parkinson (1913 - 1990)
Norman Parkinson established his first photographic studio in 1934 and following World War II rapidly became one of Vogue and Harpers Bazaar most prominent photographer. Sharing with Toni Frissel the honor of being the first to have brought models outdoors, the British photographer privileged a realistic and impulsive aesthetic. He brought glamour and fantasy to his narratives that featured colorful and elegant yet humorous compositions that often took place in exotic landscapes - ‘I like there to be a joke in practically every photo I take.’ He discovered such models as Grace Coddington and Jerry Hall whom he depicted in 1975 in the USSR and pushed a certain Brian Ferry fascinated by her portrait to ask her to pose for a Roxy Music album cover and become her girlfriend. Rigorous yet surrealist are adjectives that would perfectly describe not only his images but also the man. The quintessential British charmer had an incredible allure and attitude dedicated to style.

Dovima with Elephants by Richard Avedon, 1955

I am a huge fan of the stunning photos from fashion photographer Richard Avedon. Below you will find some gorgeous photos from Dovima shot by Avedon. She was a Supermodel during the 1950s and reputed to be the highest-paid model of her time. ”Dovima with Elephants” was one in a series of pictures Avedon began making in Cirque d’Hiver, Paris, in August 1955, has become an icon. The gown was the first evening dress designed for Christian Dior by his new assistant, Yves Saint-Laurent.
Dovima with elephants, Evening dress by Dior, Cirque d'Hiver, Paris, August 1955
When it took place, New York-born Avedon was 32 and had been a professional  photographer for ten years. He had been recruited to work as a staff photographer for Harper’s Bazaar in 1945 soon after completing his military service, by the influential art director Alexey Brodovitch. Avedon, with his enthusiasm, inventiveness and instinctive visual flair, soon established himself  as a significant new voice in fashion photography.

The model chosen for the Cirque d’Hiver shoot was known as Dovima. Her real name was Dorothy Virginia Margaret Juba, but she created her professional name from the first two letters in her three given names. Tall and slender, Dovima epitomised 1950s style and was said to be one of  the highest-paid models of the period. She and Avedon often worked  together and Dovima later commented that the two of them ‘became like mental Siamese twins, with me knowing what he wanted before he explained it. He asked me to do extraordinary things, but I always knew I was going to be part of a  great picture.’ For this particular Harper’s Bazaar shoot, Dovima was asked to pose close to four circus elephantsThe shoot took place on a hot summer’s day. Avedon later recalled that when he entered the area where the elephants were kept, he saw that the animals were beautifully lit by natural light. ‘I saw the elephants  under an enormous skylight and in a second I knew … there was the potential here  for a kind of dream image.’

Avedon went on to become one of America’s most celebrated and influential photographers, particularly for his fashion and portraiture and was still creating new work up to his death at the age of 81 in 2004. About Dovima: ‘She was  the last of the great elegant, aristocratic beauties, said Avedon, ‘the most remarkable and unconventional beauty of her time.

Vintage Fashion: Travel Clothes for Vogue 1953 by Norman Parkinson

Lovely vintage fashion photo 'Travel Clothes' for Vogue 1953 from one of the twentieth century’s best-known fashion photographers Norman Parkinson. Be Inspired .....
More about Norman Parkinson
Norman Parkinson was one of the twentieth century’s best-known fashion photographers. He was active for over 50 years and was instrumental in taking portrait and fashion photography beyond the stiff formality of his predecessors and injecting an easy and casual elegance into his images. His impulsive and unstructured style changed forever the static, posed approach to fashion photography, while his enchanting, idiosyncratic persona charmed his sitters and projected an alluring and glamorous public image. Standing at 6 feet 5 inches tall, Parkinson was unable to remain unobtrusive behind the lens and instead created ‘Parks’, the moustachioed, ostentatiously elegant fashion photographer – as much a personality as those who sat for him, and frequently more flamboyant. His flawless professionalism, manners and well-rehearsed eccentricities reassured the uneasy sitter and disarmed the experienced. His photographs of celebrities, artists, the British Royal Family, as well as leading figures from the worlds of film, theatre, politics and music are known throughout the world and have become icons of twentieth century style.
